Fly On, Jackie

"Fly On, Jackie" is a heartfelt collection of songs about love, loss, hope, the beauty of nature, and the extraordinary connections that remind us how precious life truly is. At the heart of this CD is the remarkable story of Jackie and Shadow, the beloved bald eagles of Big Bear Valley whose lives captured the attention and hearts of people around the world.

For years, viewers watched Jackie and Shadow through the Big Bear Eagle Cam as they built and cared for their nest high in the San Bernardino Mountains. People became emotionally invested in their story—watching them tend their eggs through snowstorms and bitter cold, share the responsibilities of the nest, welcome eaglets into the world, and, in successful seasons, watch those young eagles grow until they were ready to spread their wings. Their story brought together people from many countries who may never have met one another, but who shared the same hopes whenever they looked into that nest.

The title song, "Fly On, Jackie," is my musical farewell to an eagle who became much more than a wild bird to those who followed her. Its companion song, "Where Tomorrow Learned to Fly," turns from farewell to legacy, remembering the young lives that began in Jackie's nest and the generations she helped bring into the world. Together, these songs celebrate Jackie's strength, perseverance and unforgettable place in the hearts of those who came to know her story from afar.

The remainder of the CD expands upon many of those same themes. "The Last Wild Voices," "The Wonders of the Earth," "Nature's Masterpiece," "The Living Heart of the Earth," "A Prayer for Mother Earth," and "Nature – What A Wonderful Gift" celebrate the magnificent natural world around us while reminding us that what we treasure today must also be protected for tomorrow. "Beyond the Air We Breathe" looks more deeply at our relationship with the living planet that sustains us.

Other selections turn toward the human journey. "The Gift of Growing Older" and "The Years That Made Me" reflect upon the meaning, memories and wisdom accumulated over a lifetime, while "The Bond That Can't Be Broken" and "A Safe Place to Land" explore the lasting connections of love, comfort and belonging that help carry us through life's changing seasons.

Although these songs tell different stories, they share a common message: life is precious, love leaves something behind, and the natural world is worth appreciating and protecting. From two eagles overlooking Big Bear Lake to the forests, oceans, mountains and people who share this remarkable planet, Fly On, Jackie is ultimately a collection about remembering what matters.
